Coma (1978)

Written and directed by Michael Crichton, based on the novel by Robin Cook.  Starring Genevieve Bujold, Michael Douglas, Rip Torn, Richard Widmark, Elizabeth Ashley, Lois Chiles, Hari Rhodes, Tom Selleck and Ed Harris.

Plot: a young doctor notices an unnatural amount of comas occurring in her Boston hospital and uncovers a horrible conspiracy.

Dr. Susan Wheeler’s (Bujold) friend Nancy (Chiles) goes in for a standard abortion procedure and winds up in a coma.  Susan wants to know why, so she starts digging.  A maintenance man is soon on her side, but then he’s killed to make it look like an accident.  Then, she’s almost killed herself.

It’s a taut little thriller.  But she’s a little crazy, so a little unlikable.  For some reason, often times a strong female lead has to be a bitch.  Maybe they’ll learn to tone that down one day.  By the end, you like her though.  Her spunk gets her into and out of so many situations.  Also, we really like Mark (Douglas) so that added some points.

All in all, we liked it and we recommend.  Me, a little more than DJ, but still.

My score: 64.  DJ’s score: 54.
