Directed by David F. Sandberg. Written by Gary Dauberman. Starring Anthony LaPaglia, Miranda Otto, Samara Lee, Lulu Wilson, Talitha Bateman and Stephanie Sigman.
Plot: after the tragic death of their little girl, a toy maker and his wife welcome several orphans into their home where they soon become targets of the supernatural.
Now, in this prequel to Annabelle, Annabelle is the name of the toy maker’s little girl who stepped in front of a car and was killed. Overall, I liked it a little less than the first Annabelle, but DJ liked it a little more. So, let me break it down.
The toy maker and his wife invite some orphans into their home. One of the orphans finds the titular doll and it unleashes a demon. There’s some very creeptastic parts that we loved. Sandberg does horror very well. He did the movie Lights Out and the short that came before it, so we are acquainted with his jarring brand of horror. And Gary Dauberman wrote IT as well as Within, so I’m used to hating him as well. LOL
What did we not like about the movie? Well, the rules were shady. This is why no modern religious movie will ever beat out The Exorcist. You can’t usually confess to a nun for instance. And why doesn’t faith protect people from demons anymore? Why are the demons so fucking strong? This is a problem we have.
But we do recommend it. The acting was awesome. The specials were nice. And it will completely ruin “You Are My Sunshine” for you. Which was honestly already ruined for me, but that has nothing to do with this review.
Our score: 66.
