The Dentist (1996)

Directed by Brian Yuzna.  Written by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli and Charles Finch.  Starring Corbin Bernsen, Ken Foree, Molly Hagan, Mark Ruffalo and Linda Hoffman.

Plot: a dentist goes off the deep end after he catches his wife cheating on him.

Dr. Alan Feinstone (Bernsen) is not a very good husband.  Unsurprisingly, he catches his wife cheating on him with the pool boy.  And he goes crazy.  He starts hallucinating and hurting people at work.  He kills a woman’s dog (they don’t show much of it though).  Then, he disfigures his wife and kills her lover, too.  And when his staff picks up on something being off, he starts to kill them.

DJ didn’t watch this movie with me because he’s afraid of the dentist anyway and didn’t want to see anything graphic.  I didn’t think the graphics were too too bad, but the movie itself is highly strange.  Much stranger then I thought it was going to be.  I mean, the end completely goes off track and I’m not sure what really happened.  I think he was just still hallucinating or something like that.

The cast is decent though.  There’s boob shots, too.  But all in all, I wasn’t very taken with the film.  It was weird for weird’s sake.  I guess I shouldn’t expect anything else from Yuzna and Gordon though.  They’ve compiled a list of strange movies (Re-animator, Society, Castle Freak, Dagon, etc.).

My score: 35.
