Attack the Block (2011)

Written and directed by Joe Cornish.  Starring Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Leeon Jones, Franz Dramew, Jumayn Hunter, Luke Treadaway and Nick Frost.

Plot: a young street gang defends their South London block from an alien invasion.

As a young gang (not the most likable characters when the movie starts) mug Sam (Whittaker), an alien falls from the sky, interrupting them.  Sam gets away and the gang, led by Moses (Boyega), goes after the alien.  After they kill it, they bring it to their drug dealers, Ron’s (Frost) place because his weed room is fortified.  This may not sound like the best beginning to a movie, but trust me, it’s worth it to stick around.

In a rather kismet situation, while fighting the aliens, Pest (Esmail) ends up hurt and they end up in Sam’s apartment.  The gang and Sam start to work together to defeat and survive the aliens.  And in a very un-horror like move, the working together makes them all much better people with less prejudices in the end.  It’s a great ending that’s worth the whole price of admission.

With an awesome soundtrack, terrific innovation, a wonderful script, amazing actors, a great story and a very powerful message, this movie sneaks in at one of our most favorite horror movies of all time.  It’s a fun watch, so get on it.

Our score: 82.
