#Alive (2020)

Directed by Cho ll-hyung. Written by Cho and Matt Naylor. Starring Yoo Ah-in and Park Shin-hye.

Plot: a gamer struggles to survive alone in his apartment during the zombie apocalypse.

Joon-Woo (Ah-in) wakes up alone in an apartment in Seoul. He lives there with his parents and sister, but they have gone out. When attempting to live stream that day, he discovers that the zombie apocalypse has broken out. He tries to reach his family by phone, but can’t. And all he sees outside his balcony is the zombie war raging. So, he does the only thing he can think to do, he gets on social media to let people know he’s alive.

Eventually, he begins to run out of food and water, so he starts to live off of alcohol alone. Going crazy, he considers suicide, but a neighbor, Yoo-bin (Shin-hye) manages to get his attention and stops him. Using a drone and a string, they exchange walkie-talkies and food to keep each other going. Eventually though, that food will run out, too, and then how will they survive??

We just love this film. The fast, smart zombies are scary as hell. The main characters are likable. It followed rules. The script was amazing. The effects were terrifying. It’s totally rewatchable. The movie has a message, too. One of hope and optimism. We really like that a horror movie can both scare and inspire.

My score: 89. DJ’s score: 93.

  1. Thanks for the review. I’ve had this one in my queue for quite a while but always skip over it to watch something else since I didn’t know if it would be good or not. I just moved it to the top of the queue and will watch it as soon as possible now.
