A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Written and directed by Wes Craven. Starring Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Johnny Depp, Ronee Blakley, John Saxon, Amanda Wyss, Jsu Garcia and Lin Shaye.

Plot: a child killer stalks teenagers in their dreams.

Tina has a nightmare about a man with “knives for fingers”. Then, it turns out that all her friends – Nancy (Langenkamp), Glen (Depp), and Rod (Garcia) – are having the same dream about the same man. The four of them wind up at a sleepover together where Tina is killed violently in her sleep. It ends up that Nancy becomes the main protagonist and has to figure out how to deal with Freddy while asleep and awake.

The movie is a classic. The cast is nice, the jumpscares are incredible and Freddy’s rhyme is an essential part of horror cinema. The movie is also original, has nice effects and we love the “No, it’s a nightmare!” song in the end credits. Still, it’s not a great movie. There are glaring plot holes, no one’s completely likable and the end is confusing as hell. But you have to watch it. Just to say you did.

My score: 68. DJ’s score: 58.

  1. Definitely a classic and a perfect gory slasher for the times. I’ll never forget only getting to see the first ten minutes the first time I saw this because my girlfriend (later my wife) went shrieking out of the theater. Great times the 80’s.
