Tales From the Hood (1995)

Directed by Rusty Cundieff, Written by Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott and Starring Clarence Williams III, David Alan Grier, Corbin Bernsen, Wings Hauser, Tom Wright, Paula Jai Parker and Roger Guenveur Smith.

Plot: An anthology in which a strange funeral director tells creepy tales to a trio of drug dealers.

Since this is an anthology there will be individual scores for each story and then an average score for the movie as a whole at the end as well as multiple pics to represent each story.

Story #1 is about crooked cops who murder an innocent man and end up paying dearly for their sin. This story followed rules, has really good acting, I dig the soundtrack and the story. In my own words, “bitch ass cops got what they deserved!” If only life imitated this art. LOL. The cops are different levels and combinations of evil and cowardice. Every character feels all too real and the payoff is great! Tara liked it with a score of 64/100 and I loved it with an 89/100.

Story 2 is about a young boy with a monster problem that only he can destroy. Rules were obeyed and he was a likable little dude. Some of the absolute best innovation for a kill we have ever seen. There is an amazing twist on the monster angle. Good acting, really nice effects and it’s an interesting story. Highly rewatchable with a killer ending…get it…killer….yea you get it. This was our favorite story with Tara giving it an 85/100 and me giving it a 97/100.

Story 3 is about a racist politician living and working in a former plantation house where many slaves were murdered. Their souls now reside in Voodoo dolls made by an old slave woman. This is, of course, a great motive, has good acting and the character breakdown is well done. Great story and script. A very creepy tale with justice being done in a satisfying ending. Tara really liked it with a score of 75/100 and I liked it even more with a score of 84/100.

Story 4 is about a murderer who goes to a prison with a unique behavior modification therapy. Highly original, very realistic with a great story and a great message. Like the rest of the movie, the guilty get theirs in the end. This story is heartbreaking in places if you ask me, if you don’t feel for that little girl, you have no soul. Sends a message I think needs to be sent. Tara gave a 59/100 and I gave it an 86/100.

We aren’t sure if everyone gets the whole message of this movie but we urge you to look at it and take it in. Tara is quoted as saying “bitches deserve to die and go to hell” LOL. The whole movie is good with good acting, writing, direction and a great message without being preachy. It even managed to be scary. The wraparound story was just as good as the rest of the movie (unlike many anthologies) and got an 84/100 from both of us.

Our final scores were Tara with a 73/100 and me with a 92/100, we strongly recommend this!
