Megan (2022)

Written by Akela Cooper and James Wan.

Directed by Gerard Johnstone.

Starring Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Amie Donald and Jenna Davis.

Plot: A roboticist gives a new AI doll to her niece as a companion and things don’t go well.

Cady (played superbly by Violet McGraw), loses her parents tragically and is taken in by her Aunt Gemma (played well by Allison Williams). Unfortunately, Gemma is bad at life, in pretty much every aspect. She is at times awkward, rude and self-centered. She doesn’t really get along with many people; her neighbor and her boss being prime examples. She does not know how to take care of or relate to a kid.

Gemma does try though, which counts for something. She has this goal of creating an AI companion, but gets push back from her boss, David. She does it anyway though and gives the prototype to her niece. Which is a bad idea even without the possibility of where a horror movie would take things.

Gemma impresses David by showing him Cady with Megan and they submit Megan’s design for marketing. Shortly after the shit hits the fan. But it ends up happier than I expected and aunt and niece wind up bonding.

I like the acting in Megan. The situations and reactions are realistic. Not too many likable characters and Gemma is God awful in the beginning, but we think she had to be for the movie to work. The script is good, solid rules, nice effects. Soundtrack is on point. The story is interesting, the opening is memorable, and it ends nicely. It’s also pretty funny in places. We would totally rewatch this for fun.

Tara nearly loved it with a 76 and I just plain did with an 88.
