Sleepaway Camp (1983)

Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik. Starring Felissa Rose, Jonathan Tiersten, Karen Fields, Christopher Collet, Mike Kellin and Katherine Kamhi.

Plot: shy and awkward Angela is sent to summer camp with a few disturbing secrets and anyone with less than noble intentions will find them out the hard way!

Angela, Sweet Angela

This is a strange and highly enjoyable movie about Angela (Rose), a child who, in the opening scenes, watches her family die in a freak boating accident. Justifiably afraid of the water now and a little more than weird, she lives pretty isolated with her aunt and cousin. Being a doctor, her aunt decides that summer camp is what she needs. She sends Angela to Camp Arawak along with her own son, Ricky (Tiersten). Side note before I get deeper into this: Ricky is awesome. Best character in the film!

Ricky and Angela

Unfortunately, the camp is full of bad people. Creepy cooks, condescending counselors and cruel fellow campers all wreak havoc under the not-so-watchful eye of camp owner, Mel (Kellin). When death begins to befall these characters, it’s all quite pleasurable to watch. The deaths are innovative and often quirky. And I’m not going to go anywhere near ruining the end right now. In case you have yet to see this gem, I want you to be just as surprised as we were the first go round.

Those Shorts Though?!

The whole movie is highly original. There really hasn’t been anything like it before or since. It has good acting, effects, and rules. It is also easily rewatchable. It’s clearly one of the best eighties horror films ever made! We can’t say enough good things about it.

Our score: 85.
